President of the University of Ghana (UG) University Teacher’s Association (UTAG), Professor Ransford Gyampo, claims the decision of Organized Labour to suspended its planned action was not taken by the unions involved.
According to him, the decision was one taken by just two individuals, thus, Joshua Ansah and Dr. Bampoe Addo. “Organized Labour didn’t decide on anything [suspension of strike]. It is the decision of Joshua Ansah and Bampoe,” he stated.
He disclosed that Joshua Ansah came to the Organized Labour meeting with an already prepared and signed statement suspending the strike when no discussions had been held prior to that.
The UG-UTAG strike, originally scheduled to begin on Thursday, October 10, 2024, is in response to what the association perceives as the government’s insufficient action to address the ongoing galamsey menace.
Organised Labour, during a press conference in Accra on Wednesday, stated that the government had shown efforts towards combating illegal mining, which led to their decision to suspend the strike. However, UG-UTAG remains unconvinced.
Prof. Ransford Gyampo, indicated that the galamsey menace was a cause for alarm for Ghana, stating their readiness to go ahead with the strike without Organised Labour.
