Kofi Akpaloo, the presidential candidate of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), asserted that it would be unwise for the Akufo-Addo administration to acquiesce to those demands.
According to him, that the timing of the calls for the government to address galamsey is politically suicidal.
He noted that although the issue has led to the destruction of the country’s water bodies, farmlands, and vital forest cover, posing a significant threat to the nation’s existence this is not the time for the issue to be addressed.
In an interview on Atinka TV, Kofi Akpaloo he drew a parallel between the current situation of the NPP government and the challenges it faced in 2008 under John Agyekum Kufuor.
He recounted how some drivers and other road users were arrested in Kumasi for traffic offenses, which he believes disappointed NPP supporters and contributed to their decision to vote against the party, ultimately leading to its loss of power.
“Only a president who is foolish or has mental issues would stop galamsey two months before elections”.
His comments have sparked numerous mixed reactions on social media.
While some Ghanaian social media users agree with his assertion, others disagree, arguing that it is inappropriate for someone running for president to downplay such a critical issue as galamsey and it’s negative effect on the nation.
He added that the government missed their opportunity to end galamsey when the media coalition against it was initially formed.
