A tragic building collapse in the early hours of Sunday, October 20, 2024, at Sokoban Wood Village in Kumasi claimed the life of one construction worker, while three others were rescued from the rubble.
The incident occurred at a construction site where a one-story building unexpectedly crumbled. The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) Kejetia crew swiftly responded to a distress call at 2:45 a.m. and found four workers trapped under the debris.
The GNFS rescue team was able to pull out three individuals alive, but sadly, one person was discovered dead at the scene. The body of the deceased has since been handed over to the Ghana Police Service for preservation and further investigation.
Authorities are now investigating the cause of the collapse to assess if safety measures were violated. The GNFS has stressed the importance of adhering to safety regulations in construction projects to avoid such tragedies in the future.
“The swift response from our team ensured three lives were saved. However, this tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the need for all construction projects to comply with safety protocols,” the GNFS said in a statement.
Further investigations will aim to determine whether negligence or structural flaws led to the collapse.
