The STEM education in Ghana is gradually gaining roots as students of the Obuasi Senior Hight Technical School have invented a dialysis machine which takes its power from solar energy.
In the wake of high cases of kidney patients in Ghana amidst the announcement of a free dialysis care under the National Health Insurance Scheme, the solar powered dialysis machine if acquired and put to use, will help a lot especially during the recent electrity power disruptions.
The machine as invented by the students has the capacity to filter toxic substances from the body like urea, excess salt and dissolved minerals and excess water according to them. They displayed their new invention during the Sci-Tech festival at the National Theatre in Accra.
According to the students every component of the dialysis machine was built by them in the science laboratory on campus, just a few components were bought from the market. They explained that, the machine works on both the electricity and the solar panel. The solar panel is fixed on it to serve as an alternative power supply should the National grid go off.
