The New Patriotic Party (NPP) caucus in parliament has triggered Article 112(3) to demand the Speaker recall parliament.
The NPP is demanding Speaker Alban Bagbin to recall parliament to attend to urgent government business.
The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Bagbin, on 17 October 2024 officially declared four parliamentary seats vacant. They include Peter Yaw Kwakye Ackah of Amenfi Central (NDC), Andrew Amoakoh Asiama of Fomena, Kojo Asante of Suhum (NPP), and Cynthia Morrison of Agona West (NPP).
This follows a formal petition submitted by Haruna Iddrisu to the Speaker, this led to the NPP majority now being declared the minority in parliament.
On Friday 18 October 2024 the Supreme Court halted the Speaker’s ruling, which had effectively removed the MPs from their positions. After the NPP filed an application seeking a stay of execution regarding the Speaker’s declaration.
Meanwhile the Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin on 22 October 2024 adjourned parliamentary proceedings indefinitely, citing the lack of a quorum as the reason for halting the session and briefly mentioned that he had received a communication from the Supreme Court.
