Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), says Ghana was not founded by a group of people, hence, not the leaders of the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC), best know as the ‘Big Six’.
According to him, Ghana has one founder only, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, whose imposing efforts led to Ghana’s Independence.
John Mahama indicated that there is an attempt by some people to claim the ‘Big Six’ founded Ghana and distort the country’s history, when the ‘Big Six’ even opposed the country’s independence.
Speaking at an event to mark Kwame Nkrumah Memorial day in Accra, Mahama said, “There are those who seek to dilute Nkrumah’s role in our history as the nation’s founder by introducing the idea of a ‘Big Six’. Let me clear and equivocal here. While many far beyond the big six being bandied around played significant roles in independence struggle, Nkrumah was that critical catalyst that brought the struggle to a head and eventually resulted in the historic liberation of Ghana from colonial domination.”
John Mahama described the big six as “an accident of history not a united force,” adding that members of the six opposed the vision of rapid independence of Nkrumah.
He charged Ghanains and the continent to band together to keep Nkrumah’s legacy in tact, and pursue his vision for Ghana and Africa.
