A former District Chief Executive (DCE) of Sekyere Central, Kwadwo Banahene Bediako, has accused the National Democratic Congress (NDC) of harboring evil intentions against the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and Ashantis in general.
According to him, the NDC built the Kejetia Market to punish Ashanti’s and the NPP.
Speaking on Oyerepa TV, Banahene Bediako said, “Let me tell you the whole idea behind the construction of Kejetia market. In the past, Kejetia market was a hub for NPP campaign activities. With the election approaching, the NPP would’ve gone to organize rallies and campaigns there. The agenda for building the market was to make sure no groups were able to gather there.
In the past, you could easily park your car and access Adum to trade. Ashantis are known business people who make their wealth from trading. So the NDC wanted to weaken the economic and financial power of the Ashantis. Strategically the Kejetia market was constructed to make sure we can’t gather as a party (NPP) and also to collapse businesses.”
In August 2015, the Government of Ghana announced a redevelopment plan for the entire market. The first phase of the project begun in 2015 and was valued at a cost of US$259,425,000 by the John Dramani Mahama government. The phase included a brand new market equipped with about 8,420 stores, and was completed in late 2018.
The second phrase was undertaken by the Nana Akufo-Addo government and Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene on 2 May 2019 for work to commence. It is estimated to cost around US$248 million and is being financed by Deutsche Bank. It is still yet to be completed.
