Mortuary Workers Association of Ghana (MOWAG) has temporarily suspended their indefinite strike, which had left many families stranded as they prepared to bury their loved ones.
However, the workers have issued a stern warning to the government, demanding that their concerns be addressed within two weeks or they will resume their strike.
This decision comes after ongoing discussions regarding their unmet demands, which include inadequate personal protective equipment (PPE), unpaid salary arrears dating back to 2020, and urgent financial clearance to hire additional staff at fair wages.
Richard Kofi Jordan, General Secretary of MOWAG, underscored the serious health concerns affecting workers, noting that approximately 30 fatalities occur annually due to complications related to their working conditions.
He further revealed that if the government fails to respond to their demands, they will escalate the strike, leaving the future of mortuary services in jeopardy.
Families at the Ho Teaching Hospital Mortuary expressed relief at the temporary suspension, but the uncertainty remains as they prepare for upcoming burial arrangements.
