Meet the US-based journalist of Ghanaian descent, Kumasi Aaron, who got the opportunity to interview America’s ace interviewer herself, Oprah Winfrey.
A video posted on Twitter, now X, shows Kumasi Aaron, who works as a journalist with ABC7 News, in a casual-setting interview with Oprah, in which the veteran journalist is seen singing and dancing to the name ‘Kumasi’, and further attempts to teach the journalist how to pronounce her own name.
“Kumasi! Kumasi! Kumasi! Hey hey!” she sang and danced.
Your chin must lift when you’re saying it. Kumasi. Yes, it is not a humble name. You have to say it like ‘I am here!’ Like you mean it. Like you know what you’re talking about”, Oprah Winfrey said.
According to Aaron Kumasi, her mother named her after the capital city of the Asante Kingdom in the Ashanti Region of Ghana because she took a peculiar liking to the name after learning about Kumasi through a history research.
Lots of Ghanaians in the diaspora have grown interest in finding out about their roots and embracing their indigenous culture, and it is very heartwarming to see them express their love for their motherland through their names and other actions, even despite some of them never actually stepping foot in Ghana or Africa.
