Hon. Kwabena Osei Bonsu, a prominent figure in Ahafo Ano North, Ashanti Region, has led over 200 members of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) to defect to the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Citing reasons such as unfair treatment, discrimination and lack of engagement from the NPP, Osei Bonsu announced his departure from the party.
Osei Bonsu, who contested as an independent candidate in the 2020 parliamentary election for Ahafo Ano North, revealed that his decision to leave the NPP was not taken lightly.
“Before I contested as an independent in 2020, I was with the NPP, and a lot happened to lead to my decision. After that, I had to make decisions with the options I had available: to quit politics, go independent again, or join any of the parties,” he explained.

He lamented that despite his longstanding association with the NPP, the party failed to engage him after the election, pushing him to explore other political avenues.
The NDC, however, saw value in his vision for the constituency’s development and extended an invitation, which ultimately led to his defection.
This could potentially be a blow to the NPP in one of its strongholds, raising concerns about potential further defections as internal party dynamics continue to evolve ahead of the general elections in December.
