Investigative Journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni has revealed President Akufo-Addo’s biggest political regrets.
According to Manasseh Azure, President Akufo-Addo told a judge to resign and prepare to be named the next Speaker of Parliament, but pressure was mounted on President Akufo-Addo to retain Mike Oquaye as the NPP caucus nomination for the speaker of the 8th parliament.
In a write on X, Manasseh Azure wrote, “The judge asked for an official letter based on which to resign from the Supreme Court. While he waited, pressure mounted on Akufo-Addo to stick with Prof. Michael Aaron Oquaye as the Speaker of Parliament. Part of the argument for Mike Oquaye was due to Martin Amidu”.
“President Akufo-Addo retained Mike Oquaye, a decision a source close to him told me remains one of Akufo-Addo’s biggest political regrets”, his write-up added.
On January 7 the Opposition NDC Candidate, Alban Bagbin won the Speaker of Parliament election for Ghana. The NPP now controls the Executive arm of government while the NDC controls the legislative arm of government.
This development has since led to serious tussle in parliament with government businesses in parliament being heavily scrutinized and others being blocked by parliament. The latest tussle in parliament has ended up at the Supreme Court after Speaker Bagbin declared four seats vacant with the NPP running to the Supreme Court.
Today, the Supreme Court is currently hearing the case of Speaker Bagbin which seeks to overturn an earlier ruling that temporarily stayed his declarations of four parliamentary seats as vacant.

The First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Joseph Osei-Owusu, told me in a recorded interview for my book that a Supreme Court judge called him after NPP won the 2020 election. He declined to name the Supreme Court judge, but other sources named him, and I confirmed.
