Presidential Candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has vowed to deal with illegal mining (galamsey) activities with an iron fist when voted into office.
According the NDC candidate, his administration will prioritize land and environmental reclamation and enact stringent mining regulations to address the destruction caused by illegal mining.
As president, he promised to conduct a through audit of these mining concessions and hold owners of these concessions accountable for any destruction caused.
John Dramani Mahama also indicated that the Minerals and Mining Law will be amended to ensure persons involved in galamsey activities suffer harsher punishment.
“We will compel small-scale miners to undertake skills training in modern responsible methods and land reclamation techniques as part of their operations to minimise environmental harm,” he stated.
The politician noted that public officials would not be allowed to partake in any form of mining activities.
