Illegal mining popularly Known as galamsey has polluted major rivers in Ghana.
The state of major rivers in Ghana, The Tano, Birim, Ankobrah and Pra among others, have deteriorated since illegal mining has become out of control in recent years.
The Ghana Water Company has stated on numerous time they are unable to treat the water for its consumers due to the turbidity of the water from this galamsey affected rivers, forcing the company’s treatment plant in some regions to shut down on some occasions.
Almost all major rivers and streams across the country are highly polluted by illegal miners.
A list has emerged on social media platform X posted by JOY 99.7 FM detailing in a graphic image the map of Ghana and the 16 major polluted rivers due to the Galamsey menace in the country.
