John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has warned that Ghanaians will not tolerate any attempt by the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) to cling to power after the 2024 elections, calling anyone who tries a “nincompoop.”
Mahama made this bold statement on September 18, emphasizing that any refusal to hand over power after a loss would provoke the fury of the public.
“Let us win this election, and if a nincompoop says he will not hand over power, that’s when you will witness the anger of Ghanaians,” Mahama remarked, indicating the seriousness of the situation and the potential for unrest if democratic processes are undermined.
Mahama’s concerns echo those of Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin, who has also stressed the importance of a peaceful transition of power. Bagbin recently reminded President Nana Akufo-Addo that the presidency belongs to the people and that the 2024 election will be crucial in determining the strength of Ghana’s multiparty democracy. He dismissed any notion of the NPP retaining power without a legitimate mandate as “empty boasting.”
The comments from both Mahama and Bagbin came in response to President Akufo-Addo’s remarks, where the president expressed reluctance to hand over power to Mahama, should he win. Speaking to supporters, Akufo-Addo endorsed Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as his preferred successor, stating he had no confidence in Mahama to continue his work and warning that Mahama would undo his achievements if given the chance.
The ongoing exchange between these political leaders has heightened tensions as the 2024 election approaches, with the future of Ghana’s democratic legacy at stake.
