The fabric of hardship has wrapped Ghana very tightly these past few years but kenkey selling at GHC7 is a blow that Ghanaians certainly did not see coming.
Earlier this week, kenkey vendors in some parts of Accra announced that a ball of kenkey, which used to sell at only GHC2 barely two years ago, will now be sold at GHC7 per ball, leaving kenkey lovers in a state of distraught.
True to the rumors, a social media user posted a photo of a print out pasted at a kenkey joint which read, “Dear customer, from tomorrow 8th September, 2024 onwards, kenkey is sold at GHC7″.
Kenkey lovers on social media have expressed their displeasure on the issue as it was only a few months ago that they were hit with news which they are still trying to cope with, that shitor will now be sold separately when buying kenkey.
The Ghanaian delicacy, made from fermented white corn, has always been a go-to meal due to its affordability and easily-satisfying nature, not to talk of the great taste.
However, with the recent surge in prices of goods and commodities in Ghana, kenkey sellers are forced to increase the prices of the food to be able to make good profit and make ends meet. What used to be a budget-friendly food is gradually making its way into the price range of ‘luxury food’.
