Former Italian International Salvatore “Toto” Schillaci has passed away at the age of 59.
The former player renowned for his breath-taking performance in the 1990 World Cup die at the Palermo hospital where he had been receiving treatment for colon cancer.
His dead was confirmed on Wednesday.
During the 1990 World Cup held in Italy, Schillaci netted six goals earning him the tournament’s golden boot.
“A football icon is leaving us, a man who has entered the hearts of Italians and sports fans around the world,” Italy’s prime minister Giorgia Meloni posted on X.
