President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, has found himself in an awkward situation with President Akufo-Addo following his speech on illegal mining.
Dwumfour urged the president to fulfill his promise to put his presidency on the line to combat illegal mining before leaving office.
“Mr president remember you said you will put your presidency on the line to fight illegal mining “.
During the 28th GJA Media Awards, Dwumfour made a strong call for immediate action against illegal mining, commonly referred to as “Galamsey.” His remarks come amidst alarming reports of young men engaging in Galamsey activities, which have devastating effects on agriculture and local ecosystems.
Disturbingly, illegal miners have been destroying maize farms, threatening the livelihoods of farmers and exacerbating food insecurity.
The tension between Dwumfour and President Akufo-Addo was palpable during the event, as the president appeared displeased with the GJA president’s assertions. Observers noted the discomfort in the room.
Nana Addo bore our (GJA) president Mr Dwumfuor? I hope what I’m seeing is not it. How do you get angry for a call to fulfil your own promise of fighting galamsey? I hope this was before Mr Dwumfuor’s amazing speech and has nothing to do with his speech. pic.twitter.com/Z3Px3IXRIE
