Some galamsey operators operating near the Anyinam Police station in the Atiwa East District have abandoned their site.
According to reports by JOYNEWS on October 9 revealed that illegal miners have abandoned their sites.
The Changfan operators have cleared out of the area but have left a highly polluted Birim that flows along the main Kumasi Accra Road.
Appearing before the Assurance Committee to answer questions from the Committee of Parliament on Monday, October 7, the Chief Executive of the Minerals Commission, Martin Ayisi, disclosed that illegal mining (galamsey) is actively ongoing behind a police station at Anyinam, in the Atiwa East District.
He said, “We have reported severally that behind the Anyinam police station, people are doing some down there which we have not permitted. How come the police are not taking action?”
The Changfan operators abandoning their operation could be a result of President Akufo-Addo’s directive.
In a press statement dated yesterday, October 9, 2024, the President directed the Minister for Defence to deploy additional military forces to intensify the ongoing “Operation Halt”, which aims to curb illegal mining activities.
Part of the statement read, “The operation will be bolstered by the deployment of naval boats on polluted river bodies to ensure the immediate cessation of all mining activities, legal or illegal, in and around these water bodies.”
President Akufo-Addo also expressed his commitment to end illegal mining and called on all Ghanaians to unite in the fight.
