The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo-Dampare has broken his silence regarding protest in the country.
Speaking at a Ghana Police discussion on the safety measures and police protocol during December the IGP reacted to issue dealing with protest when he was asked.
IGP Dampare stated “there is this misconception, that the police don’t want people to demonstrate, who are we that we can stop anybody from demonstrating? So, from today we want to beg of you let the message be out there we are not against anybody demonstrating”.
The IGP added it is unfortunate you cannot tell him you want to protest tomorrow, because the laws indicates that the Police should be given 5 clear days.
He added that, “the law says inform the police it didn’t say seek permission from the police, when the police is informed, the police has to invite you in and engage you and the information you give to the police in terms of the place you want to start, the route you want to use, the destination, and the date, probably an estimation of the number of people involve.
“When the information is received the police call to engage you and if everything sits well in the context of the fact that no other persons right will be compromised, if there will be public safety, in context there will be public health and all things that makes us a complete human being then we all agree and come to support you”, he reiterated.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service has arrested 54 protesters charged with conspiracy to commit a crime are currently in remand waiting for their court hearing.
