President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kurt Okraku has empathically stated that the association does not interfere with player selection decisions of the senior national team, the Black Stars.
According to him, coaches of the national teams are given the freedom to select players of their choice to join the squad.
”If I hire a coach who expects me to select players for him, I will fire the coach. I am repeating myself. If I hire the coach for Ghana and that coach expects me Kurt to select players for him that coach will be fired immediately,” he told the Parliamentary Select Committee following a petition by Save Ghana Football, a group that protested after the Black Stars’ disappointing group stage exit at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.
The GFA boss indicated that he and his team is not ready to work with a coach who relies on them (GFA) to make his team for him.
“Players of the Black Stars are selected by the technical team of the Black Stars led by the current coach of the Black Stars, Oto Addo simple,” he reiterated.
The GFA has always been accused of influencing the team make up of national teams, pushing for their players to receive callups regardless of their form and performance. This has been attributed to the poor performance of the Black Stars in recent times.
