The Institute of Climate and Environmental Governance (ICEG) is planning to petition the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) offices in Ghana to pile pressure on President Akuffo Addo to take action against illegal mining.
ICEG believes stronger external influence may compel government to act and save the environmental , forest reserves and water bodies from the ongoing destruction caused by galamsey.
The group in a statement is demanding that the IMF and the world bank impose financial sanctions and suspend funds earmarked to assist Ghana if government fails to heed their call.
ICEG expressed grave concern over the severe impact of galamsey on river Pra, Daboase, and Ankobra, which have been transformed into toxic streams due to rampant illegal mining activities.
