Presidential Candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has voiced strong concerns over the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) efforts to rewrite Ghana’s history, particularly regarding the contributions of the nation’s first President, Osagyefo
During his Western Region tour in Ellembelle, Mahama accused the NPP of distorting the historical narrative to downplay Nkrumah’s role in Ghana’s independence and nation-building.
Mahama vehemently rejected attempts to undermine Nkrumah’s legacy, stating that the NDC would work to restore the true history of Ghana’s founding.
“We cannot allow anyone to distort the history of our nation for political gain,” Mahama said.
He criticized the current administration for revising history textbooks to minimize Nkrumah’s contributions while elevating the role of other figures, such as the Big Six, in an attempt to shift the narrative surrounding Ghana’s independence.
Reflecting on the impact of the NPP’s revisionism over the past eight years, Mahama recalled his vow during the 21st September anniversary of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah’s birth, where he promised to bring Nkrumah back to prominence once the NDC returns to power.
“When the NDC comes into power, the revisionism that has taken place to reduce the role of Nkrumah will be reversed,” Mahama declared.
“We will review the changes made to our textbooks and ensure the history of our independence is told truthfully.”
“In every revolutionary struggle or independence movement, many contribute, but there is always one individual who sparks the movement and leads the nation.
Dr. Kwame Nkrumah was that individual for Ghana.”
He vowed that under an NDC government, any attempt to revise this historical fact would be reversed, and Nkrumah’s central role in the country’s independence would be fully restored.
“The NDC will always stand for the truth, and we will restore the true history of our nation,” he concluded.
