- Former president and Presidential candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has promised amnesty for all Ghanaians jailed for illegal mining, popularly called ‘galamsey’.
He made this statement during a durbar with the chiefs and people at Odum- Banso.
“When we come into power, all those who were arrested for galamsey will be granted amnesty so they can go back and work” he said.
He emphasized that he and his government would ensure that such convicts are integrated into the society if he is successful in his bid to return to power.
While some people see it as a clear statement to undermine the government’s efforts to combat illegal mining, Mahama believes that many of the jailed miners have shown remorse and deserve a second chance to reintegrate into society hence his decision.
He plans to introduce policies that will promote responsible mining practices to prevent environmental damage once he wins the election.
