President Akufo-Addo has finally broken his silence on a statement he made about illegal mining commonly known as galamsey.
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in July 2017 made a very popular statement, addressing a two-day workshop on galamsey for traditional leaders, the President said, “I have said it in the Cabinet, and perhaps this is the first time I am making this public, that I am prepared to put my Presidency on the line on this matter.
“If, by the grace of God, my party allows me to go again and I have the health and everything to go again but do not get it again, then I will say to myself. ‘Well, this is a choice I have to make as a human being.’ Do you do what is right or what you think will make you get along? I think you do what is right and what you are required to do,” he added.
In a recent his recent tour of the Northeast region, President Akufo-Addo finally broke his silence on what he meant when he made those statements.
Addressing the people of Northeast, he said, “In the 2020 election after the government had acted on the galamsey, he(John Mahama) went around all the mining districts in Ghana to tell them that when he comes he would give amnesty to anybody who had been attacked by the galamsey issue by my government”.
He added, “It is not surprising that the NPP lost in all those mining constituencies, but now he is saying that when he comes, he will enforce the galamsey laws we want the four times NDC presidential candidate to come clean and tell us where he stands”
“This is what I meant when I say I was prepared to put my presidency on the line, I was prepared to take the political risks in dealing with galamsey”, President Akufo-Addo revealed.
Meanwhile, President Akufo-Addo has since in a press statement dated October 9, 2024, directed the Minister for Defense to deploy additional military forces to intensify the ongoing “Operation Halt”, which aims to curb illegal mining activities.
