Parliamentary Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Zebilla Constituency, Dr. Kingsley Krugu, says over a hundred people have been killed in Bawku following the renewed chieftaincy conflict.
The longstanding chieftaincy conflict, which had recently appeared to calm, escalated after the return of a rival chief, Alhaji Seidu Abagre, to the area.
Alhaji Seidu Abagre had been in exile since his installation in February 2023 in Nalerigu, returned to Bawku after a Kumasi High Court quashed his arrest warrant on October 17, 2024. His return ignited tensions in the area on Saturday, 26th October, 2024.
The tensions have led to the death of several people including young children, with many others suffering various degrees of injuries.
Although the police in the initial stages were overwhelmed by the situation, they have assured the public that things are under control in the area now thanks to a joint military and police taskforce set up to stabilize the situation.
Although the total number of dead people have not been officially declared, the NPP PC claims more than a hundred lives have been lost.
