Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Member of Parliament for North Tongu, has accused President Nana Akufo-Addo’s daughters of establishing a marijuana business named Good Grow Limited shortly after the legalization of cannabis for industrial purposes in Ghana. Ablakwa made the allegations during a live television discussion with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Communications Officer, Sammy Gyamfi.
According to Ablakwa, the company, co-founded by the president’s daughters, Gyankroma and Edwina Akufo-Addo, along with their associate Steven Okoro, was set up immediately following Parliament’s approval of marijuana cultivation for industrial use in July 2020. “Their principal activity is to grow cannabis,” Ablakwa claimed, suggesting a direct link between the legislative approval and the swift formation of the business.
In addition to Good Grow Limited, Ablakwa alleged that the President’s daughters and their friends have established a total of 42 companies across various industries, including mining, microfinance, and agriculture. He suggested that these ventures, formed during Akufo-Addo’s tenure as president, have capitalized on insider dealings and politically motivated business opportunities.
“Between Steven Okoro and Edwina Akufo-Addo’s close friend, Alvin Mensah, they have set up 42 companies across different sectors. They are doing brisk business, and I have evidence to back these claims,” Ablakwa stated. He further cited the Auditor General’s report, which, according to him, reveals inflated invoices and insider dealings, pointing to significant financial losses caused by politically exposed persons.
The allegations have sparked widespread debate, raising questions about the intersection of politics and business in Ghana, particularly concerning the involvement of family members of high-ranking officials in lucrative sectors like cannabis cultivation.
