Vice President Dr. Bawumia Unveils Strategy to Tackle Illegal Mining Vice president and the flagbearer of the New Patriotic party (NPP) Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has outlined strategies to combat illegal mining, popularly known as Galamsey. He stated that his plan involves sanitizing the small-scale mining sector by empowering the Geological Survey Authority to prospect for minerals and creating a resource pool of equipment to support sustainable mining practices. Speaking at Kpone Katamanso as part of his Greater Accra Campaign Tour, Dr. Bawumia addressed question about his approach to tackling illegal mining issue He stressed the importance of proactive measures to ensure that mining is conducted responsibly and sustainably. “At the moment people are just engaging in trial and error, destroying our environment. There is no data backing where they go. They just dig and move, they don’t find, they go to the next place and start digging they don’t find, they go to the next place. “Dr Bawumia proposed setting up community mining schemes with confirmed deposits from the Geological Survey Department. In that case, we can make sure that those who are mining there are regularized. “That is the way you stop this. But if you don’t regulate them then they will hide to do it at night and when they feel people are not watching them, that’s where they will go.
