Ghanaian musician Maradona Adjei Yeboah, widely known as Guru, has won the University of Ghana (UG) SRC presidential election.
Together with his running mate, Jeffery Adu-Yeboah, they both gathered 9,455 votes out of the 18,659 total votes cast.
This victory comes in the wake of a lawsuit filed by Asioh Joseph Mawuli, a second-year Bachelor of Arts student, against the university’s administration concerning the SRC elections.
The legal dispute arose after Guru re-entered the presidential race for the SRC.
Guru, who had initially been disqualified from the election, leading him to file a petition against the Council’s Electoral Commission.
His disqualification was based on his non-residential status, which contravened Article 30 of the SRC constitution, stating that candidates must be residents on campus and eligible to contest for a Junior Common Room (JCR) position in their hall.
Mawuli’s lawsuit sought a declaration that the decision to disqualify Guru and Emmanuel Owusu Amponsah by the SRC vetting committee, due to their failure to meet the Article 30(1)(a) requirement, was lawful and should stand.
