Ghanaian business magnate and former Executive Director of Stanbic Bank, Alhassan Andani has described the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) as a terrorist organization.
According to him, the GRA keeps slapping taxes on private businesses, and scaring business with their mode of tax collection.
During a panel discussion at the 2024 Ghana CEO-Presidential Gala Diner, he said, “Actually GRA has become a terrorist organization. I know a number of organization when GRA gets into their space (they become scared of having their businesses closed down), it is as if they (GRA) deliberately do it in order to wriggle people’s arms in order to take money. It is true Mr. Vice President. Most of your CEOs when GRA is coming, it is like some terrorists coming. It is supposed to be you file what you projected to do for the year and you pay tax quarterly and I pay (it). But they come and just come to slap tax on you.”
He urged the government to simplify or merge and delete some taxes when new tax measures are introduced.
The businessman revealed that he had discussions with some businesses in the past where it was revealed that they were paying 33 different taxes to his surprise.
“We just have to rationalize it (taxes) and give the very emerging capital or private sector people time to breath, so that you can at least continue to tax them,” he added.
