The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has denied the recent assaults on its personnel while on duty, which left one severely injured and others traumatized.
The GNFS has also pledged to take
strict legal action against the attackers and is committed to protecting its staff at all costs.
In a press statement issued on Tuesday, 10th September, 2024, the Service disclosed the series of attacks on its personnel in recent days.
The GNFS detailed that on September 3, ADO Il Abdul Aziz Annor, a firefighter from the Ministries Fire Station, was assaulted by a driver and his mate while refilling the station’s fire truck at La Palm T-Junction in Accra.
ADOII Annor sustained a fractured ankle and is currently receiving treatment at the 37 Military Hospital, with surgery planned for later this week.
Just two days later, officers from the Dansoman Fire Station were verbally and physically attacked by residents while responding to a fire near the Dansoman Roundabout. The altercation occurred after the fire truck briefly left to replenish its water supply.
Despite the attack, the firefighters managed to contain the blaze with the assistance of two additional fire trucks, preventing further damage to nearby properties.
“The matter has been reported to the Dansoman Police, and investigations are ongoing to bring the perpetrators to justice.
“The GNFS reminds the public that assaulting firefighters is unlawful and will be met with strict legal action. Our personnel risk their lives daily to protect citizens and property, and they deserve respect and support from the public,” parts of the statement read.
Management has in the meantime, committed to providing the injured firefighter with the best possible care and pursuing legal action to secure justice for all affected personnel.
GNFS have went on to warn the general public that the Service will employ all legal measures to safeguard its staff while they are carrying out their duties.
“Our personnel risk their lives daily to protect citizens and property,” the statement said, “and they deserve respect and support from the public”.
