The running mate of the New Patriotic Party Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh has said should Ghanaians give the NPP the mandate he would be the number one advocate for the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme.
According to Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, but for the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme the country would have collapsed.
Speaking in a one-on-one interview on GTV, “But for DDEP the country would have collapsed, the sacrifice DDEP bondholders have done for Ghana is equal to the sacrifice of life some laid for Ghana to become independent.
“I will be an advocate for the bondholders to receive even more of what is due them, why I have said, but for the sacrifice of bondholders we wouldn’t have gone through this IMF restructuring program, every other person who has granted us reprieve did it at the back of DDEP, 95 percent of bondholders willingly gave up their bonds for new bonds that will mature a different times not their liking”, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh reiterated.
Matthew Opoku Prempeh asserted that because of the IMF program the government cannot give preferential treatment to bondholders.
He added that our economy is improving, and that Ghana will leave the IMF program as quickly as possible.
On 5th December 2022, the Government of Ghana launched Ghana’s Domestic Debt Exchange program, an invitation for the voluntary exchange of approximately GHS137 billion of domestic notes and bonds for a package of New Bonds to be issued by the Republic.
