Dr. Nana Ayew Afriye, Member of Parliament for Effiduase/Asokore in the Ashanti Region and owner GhanaWeb (Ghana’s most controversial online portal), has threatened legal action against TV3 and Onua TV for allegedly publishing false and defamatory content about him.
Through his lawyers, Dr. Ayew Afriye has petitioned the National Media Commission (NMC), demanding that the two media outlets retract their statements and issue an apology.
According to the lawyers, on September 26, 2024, Dr. Ayew Afriye spoke at an NPP event in the Ashanti Region, where he addressed the topic of small-scale mining, including both legal community mining and illegal small-scale mining, popularly known as galamsey. He reportedly clarified the distinction between responsible community mining and illegal mining, strongly condemning galamsey for its devastating impact on the environment and water bodies in Ghana.
However, Dr. Ayew Afriye’s legal representatives claim that TV3 and Onua TV misrepresented his comments and doctored recordings of his speech, leading to public disapproval and harming his reputation as a medical professional, politician, and Member of Parliament. The lawyers argue that the misleading coverage was unethical and intended to damage their client’s image.
The petition to the NMC requests that TV3 and Onua TV retract their publication and use the same platform to issue an apology. Failure to comply with these demands may lead to further legal action from Dr. Ayew Afriye.
