Guinness World Records has confirmed Ghana’s Abdul Hakim Awal as the new record holder for “tree-hug-a-thon”.
The record which was previously held by Ugandan environmental activist Faith Patricia Ariokot has been broken and extended by the Ghanaian journalist who is based in Kumasi.
Faith Patricia Ariokot’s was 16 hours but Abdul Hakim Awal broke the record and extended it to 24 hours 21 minutes. Abdul took on this challenge to break the record for the “tree-hug-a-thon”, in his quest to highlight the importance of nature conservation in Ghana.
He also made a pledge to plant a new tree for every minute his record attempt lasted, finishing at a total of 1,461.
“A 23-year-old journalist from Kumasi, Ghana, has broken the world record for the longest time to hug a tree. Abdul Hakim Awal’s “tree-hug-a-thon”, which took place outside Kumasi Cultural Centre, lasted 24 hours 21 minutes,” part of the statement from Guinness World Records read.
