Neizens are calling for the resignation of the Minister of Gender, Children, and Social Protection, Dakoa Newman, for her silence on the arrest and detention of 31 protesters, including a pregnant woman and children under 13, who are currently in police custody for their involvement in the #StopGalamseyNow demonstration organized by the Democracy Hub from September 20 to September 22, 2024.
The #StopGalamseyNow movement arose in response to the rampant illegal mining activities, known locally as “Galamsey,” which have caused significant environmental degradation and social disruption in affected communities.
The demonstrations aimed to draw attention to the government’s failure to enforce laws against these practices, which threaten local livelihoods, health, and ecosystems.
During the protests, tensions escalated, leading to a heavy police presence.
Officers clashed with demonstrators, resulting in the arrest of those peacefully advocating for their rights.
The 31 detained individuals, including the pregnant woman and children, were subsequently brought before the court, where their treatment and the circumstances of their detention became focal points for public outrage.
Minister Dakoa Newman’s silence during this crisis has drawn criticism, as many believe that a leader responsible for the welfare of women and children should vocally oppose the arrest of vulnerable individuals.
Citizens on social media members argue that her lack of action not only undermines the rights of the detainees but also reflects a broader neglect of pressing social issues within the government
