Ghana is set to lose the international headquarters of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) to Nigeria.
According to reports cited from GHONE TV, Ghana has an outstanding debt of GHS73 million to be paid to WAEC or risk losing the international headquarters to Nigeria.
Reports indicate that Nigeria has made significant investments in developing a modern infrastructure to host the WAEC headquarters, should the Council choose to relocate.
This comes after Ghana accumulated a debt of ₵73 million over the past eight years, covering unpaid subscriptions, dues and other financial obligations to the organization.
Meanwhile, the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has been appealing to the government of Ghana for the urgent payment of GH¢110.46 million to ease the smooth completion of post-examination activities towards the release of the 2024 WASSCE results.
According to the WAEC schedule, the marking of WASSCE scripts is anticipated to be concluded by Friday, November 29, 2024.
Since the advent of the Free SHS Policy introduced in 2017, the government has absorbed all examination fees of the candidates, both at the basic and the senior high school level, and, therefore, students are no longer responsible for the payment of their examination fees.
However, the challenge with the new system had been the perennial delays in the release of funds for the examining body to carry out its mandate.
WAEC over the years has been complaining about the constant delays in the government releasing funds for the payment of supervisors and invigilators.
