The Ghana Police Service says it working judiciously with the Ghana Armed Forces to restore peace and stability to Bawku and its environs.
Seven people are feared dead in a renewed chieftaincy crisis resulting in a gun battle at Bawku in the Upper East Region.
The longstanding chieftaincy conflict, which had recently appeared to calm, escalated after the return of a rival chief to the area.
Alhaji Seidu Abagre, who had been in exile since his installation in February 2023 in Nalerigu, returned to Bawku after a Kumasi High Court quashed his arrest warrant on October 17, 2024.
His return ignited tensions in the area on Saturday, 26th October, 2024.
A vehicle was set ablaze in the process on the Walewale – Bawku highway, with some gunshots also fired at police facilities in the town.
The situation got out of control with the security agencies being unable to handle the situation.
The Police in a statement indicated that it is working with the military to ensure peace, especially along the Bolgatanga-Walewale-Tamale highway, with a joint deployment along the highway to ensure security and manage vehicular traffic.
