Ghana Freedom Party (GFP) is set to announce a new presidential candidate within the next 72 hours, following the passing of its 2024 presidential candidate, Akua Donkor.
The party will formally inform the Electoral Commission about her death and seek guidance on the necessary steps to replace the candidate on the ballot ahead of the December 7 elections.
Speaking in an interview with Yawa News, GFP General Secretary George Afful revealed plans to announce a new flagbearer: “We are committed to moving forward and ensuring that our values and vision continue to be represented in the upcoming elections.”
Party members are in mourning, displaying red bands at their Ashanti Regional office and on the party’s official vehicle in honor of Donkor’s legacy.
Meanwhile George Bencha, the GFP’s Parliamentary Candidate for the Kwabre East Constituency, described Donkor’s death as a significant loss for the party.
He expressed hope that the Electoral Commission would provide clear directives on how to proceed.
“For now, we are counting on the EC to give us the directives because we are writing officially to it about this particular incident so that they will give us the go-ahead as to how we are going to get a replacement for the flagbearership,” Bencha stated.
