Johnson Asiedu Nketia, National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has slammed Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi, the President of the National House of Chiefs (NHC), for alleged partisan behavior, accusing him of actively campaigning for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and undermining his position as a neutral figure.
Speaking during a community engagement in the Ashanti Region, Asiedu Nketia, also known as General Mosquito, criticized Gyebi for wearing NPP-branded t-shirts and participating in partisan politics, casting doubt on his ability to effectively address national issues.
Asiedu Nketia questioned the NHC president’s credibility, claiming that his active support for the NPP made it impossible for him to offer any valid criticism of the Akufo-Addo government.
Since assuming the role of NHC president, Asiedu Nketia said, Gyebi has failed to address key national concerns, allowing the country to drift without proper guidance.
The NDC chairman also took aim at the National House of Chiefs for its silence on pressing issues, including ongoing controversies in Parliament, where the House’s inaction had allowed the situation to escalate.
Asiedu Nketia further alleged that President Akufo-Addo and the NPP had orchestrated the outcome of the National House of Chiefs election to ensure that pro-government candidates were elected.
He accused the NPP of offering bribes to influence the elections, which resulted in the defeat of Togbe Afede XIV, a chief who had advocated for the abolition of ex-gratia payments.
According to Asiedu Nketia, the NPP-backed candidate, who was eventually elected, was more compliant and easier for the government to control.
