#FreeTheCitizens is gearing up for a three-day protest from October 3 to 5, 2024, aimed at demanding the release of #StopGalamseyNow activists arrested last weekend.
The group, which includes 50 protestors and lead convener Oliver Barker Vormawor, has been remanded in police and prison custody for two weeks, increasing pressure on the government for their release.
Courage Nobi, a lead convener of the protest and Deputy Communications Director for the Movement for Change, is mobilizing youth to join the demonstration.
In an interview with Yawa News, Courage outlined the details of the planned protest, which will begin at Okponglo and march to Independence Square.
“In compliance with Section 1 of the Public Order Act, Act 491, we have notified the police of a peaceful protest by concerned citizens,” he stated.
“This march aims to raise awareness about the environmental destruction caused by galamsey (illegal mining) and to demand the release of unlawfully detained protesters, while also calling for an end to unconstitutional conduct by state authorities.”
