Rumors have surfaced of President Akufo-Addo’s retirement plans after handing over power to his successor on 7 January 2025.
Reports suggest that the President had long planned his retirement and had acquired a plush French home in Nice where he once lived and practiced law. It claimed that he acquired the property three years ago.
Insiders within the presidential circles and government circles have also revealed that it doesn’t appear to be a secret.
Another rumor claims President Akufo-Addo has also acquired a home in London where he lived and schooled at the University of Oxford.
President Akufo Addo has also been connected to yet another property, a plush building at Peduase near Aburi in the Eastern Region. Like that of Ex-President John Agyekum Kufuor’s retirement home at Peduase.
The topic of ex-gratia and how an outgoing President is to be treated, have always ignited hullabaloo every eight years, after a change of government.
This allegation is coming as Ghana prepares for yet another controversy over ex-gratia for an Article 71 officeholder after President Kufuor and John Mahama.
Per 1992 constitution arrangements, the President upon his retirement enjoys not only cash, but also offices, a retirement home, staff, and vehicles.
Meanwhile. President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo officially announced his retirement plan after leaving the presidency on January 7, 2025.
Speaking at the NPP 2024 manifesto launch at Takoradi on August 18, 2024, Akufo-Addo stated that after handing over the presidency to the party’s flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, he would relocate to his hometown, Kyebi, in the Eastern Region.
