An illegal miner (galamseyers), known by the pseudonym Carlos, has revealed Officers of the Forestry Commission take weekly bribes from them (galamseyers) to allow them work in peace.
According to Carlos, Forestry Commission Officers overseeing the Enchi Forest take weekly bribes of Ghc600.00 from galamseyers.
He revealed that their operations in the Enchi forest has destroyed water bodies in the area.
“So sometimes the forestry commission people will follow the polluted water and they come to collect something. Sometimes they leave their number and every week we send them something. We send them Ghc600 every week. So, when the forestry commission (officers)come and you sort them out, you can do your work in peace,” he added.
Illegal mining, otherwise known as galamsey has become a menace in Ghana, causing immense pollution of the nation’s land and water resources.
Over the years, the government has put in various measures to curb the menace but to no avail. This failure of the government has been blamed on the involvement of government officials and agencies mandated to fight the menace in galamsey.
