Some fifteen (15) individuals have died with more than thirty-five (35) others sustaining varying degrees of injuries near Buduburam on the Winneba-Kasoa highway.
Currently, the Winneba-Kasoa highway is under construction as part of government plans to ease vehicular traffic in the area.
The contractor in charge of the road construction is Fairmount Company Limited . According to reports, Fairmount Company Limited on a regular blasts some rocks impeding their work.
Over the period, Fairmount Company Limited regularly announces its rock explosion schedules to the people living in the community. However, today, the company refused to announce the schedule and went ahead to blast the rocks without the knowledge of the community members.
A reporter for UTV, reporting the issues disclosed, ”There is a rocky area where the contractor blasts them regularly and whenever they are about to blast the rocks, they go about announcing it to students and traders. And they’ve been done it for a long time.
Today, they blasted the rock but they didn’t announce it to anyone. All they realize was people shouting at them to run away and the explosion suddenly happened. About 15 people are suspected to have died at Buduburam and some 35 have been hurt seriously.”
He disclosed that the people in the community have picked up arms to attack the contractors on site.
