In a tragic incident at Nkotompo, a community within the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis of Ghana’s Western Region, a 35-year-old mother, Mena Efua, allegedly sold her two-week-old baby for GHC300. Family members believe financial desperation may have driven her to this heartbreaking decision.
Maame Esi, the elder sister of the mother, shared details with Nhyiraba Paa Kwesi Simpson, host of Connect FM’s Omanbapa Morning Show. Esi, who had assisted with the home delivery last Monday, said the baby went missing just one week after birth. Concerned, she confronted Mena, who eventually confessed to having given the baby to an unknown individual in exchange for the money. However, she refused to identify the person.
“At first, she claimed she handed the baby to a nurse who promised to find a buyer, but she wouldn’t say who the nurse is,” Esi explained. “Now she’s saying the baby is in Accra but can’t tell us where. We’re desperately searching for help to locate the child.”
Connect FM reports that Mena allegedly gave the baby to someone who promised to find a buyer and later returned with GHC300 after arranging the sale. The case was initially filed at the Sekondi Police Station before being referred to the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU) for further investigation.
DOVVSU has since begun looking into the case, hoping to determine the baby’s whereabouts and bring clarity to this deeply troubling situation.
