President Akufo-Addo has officially commissioned the state of the art fishing harbour at Jamestown, in the Greater Accra Region.
Speaking at the commissioning of the harbour, President Akufo-Addo said, “It will create jobs, empower the economy and revitalise the lives of the fisherfolk and traders of Jamestown. We will inject new energies into the heart of this community. I have no doubt that its benefits will ripple across the nation,” he stated.
He believes that the harbour will also reduce the country’s dependence on imported fish and also create jobs for the youth in the community.
“The harbor aims to boost community safety and well-being by providing essential sanitation facilities to maintain hygiene and improve public health. It will enhance the town’s tourist infrastructure, ensure safe fish handling facilities and practices for improved catch quality, minimize post-harvest losses to support sustainable resource management and food security, and, importantly, create a wide range of employment opportunities” he added.
The ultra modern facility, which includes a cold storage unit, a fish processing centre, a fire and police station, and a crèche, is expected to generate around 4,000 direct and indirect jobs for the youth in the Ga community.
The facility also comprises a ship repair workshop, administrative offices, and fire safety systems to ensure efficient operations and long-term sustainability.
Among the dignitaries present at the commissioning were the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Daniel Nii Kwartei Titus-Glover, the Minister for Transport, Kwaku Ofori Asiamah, and the Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, H.E. Tong Defa.
