Mohammed Badaru, a building contractor, locked up the Tuvugu D/A Primary School in Zabzugu, Northern Region, on Wednesday, September 18, 2024.
The contractor who completed the six-unit classroom block in 2017 is yet to receive payment from the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) for the job done.
Frustrated with the delays and its possible effects on his business, the contractor who claimed he is indebted to his suppliers, who are threatening legal action if he does not pay them went to the school with padlocks and drove teachers and students out of the premises, locking up the facility.
The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Zabzugu, Ahmed Yussif Adarkwa, says he is disappointed t in the contractor, arguing that he could have gone through the right channels, rather than locking up the school.
He acknowledged delays in payment and the rising cost of materials but said he was not informed about the issue before it escalated.
He however pledged to work with the District Director of Education to find a way out for teachers and pupils alike.
