Ghanaian media personality, Captain Smart, has questioned the need for government to deploy one hundred (100) military personnel to the Eastern Region to fight the menace of illegal mining (galamsey).
Prior to heightened calls by Ghanaians demanding government to place a ban on galamsey, the government had already made efforts to combat the menace by forming various taskforces made up of security agencies in the country but to no avail.
Some of these security agencies, including soldiers were implicated in the galamsey menace, with it being said that some of them ended up providing security for these illegal miners to ply their trade without interruptions.
With this renewed effort to fight galamsey and the deployment of military personnel once more to fight the menace, Captain Smart believes the results will still be the same, with the soldiers being corrupted and galamsey thriving.
