Ghanaian journalist Bridget Otoo has strongly admonished the Minister for Information, Fatimatu Abubakar’s critique of CNN International correspondent Larry Madowo’s coverage of the recent anti-illegal mining protests.
Bridget Otoo asked , Both sides? The side where your party calls protestors hooligans? The side where Protesting is no longer a bailable offense cos it’s more severe than murder? Or the part where he failed to mention your party folks are heavily involved in Galamsey?
Otoo’s remarks come after Abubakar expressed disappointment in Madowo’s portrayal of the protests, which saw over 50 demonstrators arrested.
The protests, organized by the Democracy Hub, took place between September 21 and 23, and Madowo highlighted that authorities were detaining peaceful protesters opposing illegal mining activities.
Abubakar argued that Madowo’s report lacked balance, stating that responsible journalism should reflect multiple perspectives.
She reiterated the government’s commitment to maintaining public order, emphasizing that acts of vandalism and attacks on police would always be contained.
In response, Otoo raised critical questions about the narrative surrounding the protests, challenging the minister’s claims and underscoring the complexities of the situation.
