Renowned former coach and ex-Ghana international Michael Osei has died at the age of 53 in London after a short illness, his family has confirmed.
Osei, a celebrated midfielder during his playing days, passed away in the early hours of Friday, November 15, 2024. He had been residing in the United Kingdom since last year.
Playing Career
Michael Osei is remembered as one of Ghana’s finest midfielders. He began his professional football journey with Okwahu United before making a name for himself at Asante Kotoko, one of Ghana’s most prestigious football clubs. He later played in the German Bundesliga, representing Eintracht Frankfurt and Mainz 05.
Coaching Career
After hanging up his boots, Osei transitioned to coaching, where he made significant contributions to Ghanaian football. He coached several top-tier clubs, including:
- Asante Kotoko
- Liberty Professionals
- Bibiani Goldstars
- New Edubiase United
Osei also served as an assistant coach for Ghana’s U23 national team, the Black Meteors, for five years until the technical team was dissolved in 2023.
