There have been some disturbing reports in Ghana about illegal miners popularly referred to as ‘galamseyers’ engaging in terrifying acts such as sacrificing new born babies to find gold.
A retired ‘galamseyers’ in 2023, in an interview with Okatakyie Afrifa- Mensah on Angel TV, has shared some shocking insights on how far some of these illegal miners go to get their gold.
According to him, they buy newborns from hospitals and use their blood for rituals on their galamsey sites in order for them to get gold.
The retired galamseyer who refused to reveal his identity due to security reasons also emphasized that some nurses in some hospitals in Obuasi have made it very easy and possible for miners to buy babies.
“When they buy the new babies, and we get underground, they smash the babies in the walls for their blood to be spilled on the ground so we can harvest gold. The evil being committed by galamseyers at Obuasi is no joke. Baby selling is no small business in Obuasi, and this is how some nurses in Obuasi are enriching themselves” he disclosed.
He explained, this is done because, it is believed that locating gold when someone dies prematurely on the grounds is easier so they kill babies for the land to be viable for gold.
Aside the sacrificing of babies, he revealed how the galamseyers can also decide to gang up against one member and sacrifice him to discover gold.
“Sometimes they don’t mind that after several hours of working, if they are unable to find gold and they feel someone must die, they gang up against anyone whom they feel is not a part of them for instance, they can say we are Northerns and he is an Ashanti so let’s kill him and use him for sacrifice and they would do just that” he indicated.
The former illegal miner revealed that human sacrifices for gold in Obuasi is a well known secret among residents and authorities, yet no actions are being taken to stop it.
