The Presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has broken his silence on issues surrounding illegal mining (galamsey).
Speaking on one of his campaign Dr. Bawumia noted that in the fight against galamsey government has always tried to chase people instead of trying to prevent it from happening in the first place.
Dr Bawumia said, “one needs to look at the whole regime of small-scale mining and sanitize that regime, regularize the regime make sure that the Geological Survey Authority of Ghana number 1 does the mapping of where all the gold reserves are. At the moment people are just doing try and error destroying out environment there is no data backing where they go”.
He revealed that he will set up a community mining scheme with certainty from the Geological Survey department which show were gold can be found responsible mining can be done.
Dr. Bawumia added that miners need to be regulated, and the laws must be enforced.
Meanwhile, a three-day anti-galamsey protest ended last night on 5 October 2024 with a vigil. With the final day of the protest calling for the end of galamsey and the release of some 53 democracy hub protesters arrested two weeks ago.
